Navarre Raider History – 2019

Welcome to Coach Jay Walls eighth season at Navarre. The Raiders entered a new classification and district in 2019 (Class 7A, District 1). Entering the season, Coach Walls had a 70-17 overall record.
 
Navarre started out with three straight wins, all over their Santa Rosa County foes (Gulf Breeze, Pace and Milton). The Raiders entered district play in Week 4 against Lincoln, the first of their two visits to the capitol city in 2019. Grady Kelly had a monstrous night with seven sacks (school record), but it was not enough to beat the Trojans.
 
The Raiders offense struggled to find the end zone in Weeks 5 & 6, with back to back losses to Pine Forest and Niceville. In Week 7, Navarre’s defense shutout Tate and in Week 8 they couldn’t stop an offensive onslaught by the Chiles Timberwolves.
 

Week 9 found themselves back on the bus heading to Tallahassee, to face off with Leon. The ground attack was in full force for the Raiders behind Jaden Rivera and Jaydin Antonio, which gave them their first-ever win in Tallahassee.

Back home for Senior Night in Week 10 against Crestview. Navarre’s offense was unstoppable on this night as Marlon Courtney set a school record with six touchdown passes, four to Tyler England (also a school record). England was strong on defense as well with three interceptions. Unfortunately, the Raiders would miss the playoffs for the first time in Coach Walls tenure.

Navarre Raider History – 2018

The Coach Jay Walls experience entered year seven in 2018, he currently holds a 59-15 record with two State Semifinal appearances, two Region 1 Championships and four District titles. The Raiders reeled off six straight wins to start the season.
 

Convincing wins over Catholic and Washington, then an exciting comeback win over Crestview. Navarre trailed 28-0 at the half, then scored 35 straight points to take their first lead. The Bulldogs would send it to overtime with a late touchdown run, but the Raiders secured the win with an interception by Josh Carter on Crestview’s first possession. Dante Wright then sent the Raider faithful home in a great mood with a 11-yard touchdown run.

Navarre took out Choctaw in game four, then welcomed Pine Forest to Bennett C. Russell for a barnburner in game five. Marlon Courtney would find Tyler England in the back of the end zone as the Raiders scored on the last play of game for the win.

Another victory over Pace in game six, then Navarre would suffer only their second regular season loss over the last two years (both to Escambia). The Raiders took care of business in the last games with wins over Milton, Gulf Breeze and Niceville, finishing the regular season at 9-1 overall and 3-0 in District action.

The Raiders eased by Pace in round one of the playoffs. Then for the second straight year, they avenged their only regular season loss against Escambia. Navarre would grab a 27-21 lead at the end of three over Crestview in the Region title game, but it was the Bulldogs turn to post a big number in the fourth quarter (28 straight points) for the victory and the Region title.

Navarre Raider History – 2017

2016 was a hard act to follow, but the 2017 squad gave it run for their money. Coach Walls was entering his sixth season at the helm and he wanted to continue his playoff streak…and that he did.
 
The Raiders went on to win their first five games of the season (Catholic, Washington, Choctaw, Pine Forest and Pace), before falling to Escambia. Navarre built up a 27-6 lead at the half, but failed to score in the second half and the Gators rallied for the victory.
 
Navarre would win their next three over Milton, Gulf Breeze and Niceville to finish the regular season 8-1 overall and 3-0 in District play. The Raiders would play the Eagles in back to back weeks, this one in the first round of the playoffs. Navarre needed a late stop on a Niceville two point conversion to secure the win.
 
The Raiders would have to travel to St Augustine for the second straight year, this time the Yellow Jackets were not as friendly. Every thing worked for St. Augustine on this night, thus ending Navarre’s season.

Navarre Raider History – 2016 – Another Record Breaking Season

Coach Walls entered his fifth year in 2016 and the Raiders welcomed back a healthy Michael Carter and were looking for a deep run in the State playoffs.
 
Navarre started the season with eight straight wins (Catholic, Washington, Choctaw, FWB, Pace, Escambia, Milton and American Heritage-Delray Beach). The Raiders put up 70 points (school record) on American Heritage-Delray Beach in Week 8.
 
Gulf Breeze knocked off Navarre in Week 9; ending the Raiders 9-game winning streak in the Publix Beach Bowl Cup. But, Navarre would bounce back in Week 10 on the road against Niceville.
 
The Raiders went on the road for the first three rounds of the State playoffs and brought home wins against Escambia, Tate and St. Augustine to improve to 12-1 and made it to their second State Semifinal game.
 
Navarre welcomed Lake Gibson to the comfy confines of Bennett C. Russell Stadium for the State Semis. The game went to the half tied at 7-7 after Carter scored on a 56-yard run late in the second quarter. But it was all Lake Gibson in the second half as they outscored the Raiders 28-7 to earn a trip to the State Championship.
