Leon……..14 0 0 14 – 28
The Raiders (5-4, 2-3) found themselves in a District 1-7A battle at Gene Cox Stadium in Tallahassee against the Lions. With the victory, Navarre’s long trip back home was a lot more enjoyable.
Leon’s Steven Bivins got the fireworks going at 8:25 when he broke off a 56-yard touchdown. Three and half minutes later, Preston Penton booted his first of three field goals on the night, this one from 23 yards. On the ensuing possession, Paxton Tomaini scored from the one and the Lions went up 14-3 after one.
The only points of the second quarter, went to Penton as he added his second field goal (23) of the half to cut the lead to 14-6 going to the break.
Navarre would tie it up 6:01 of the third as Jaydin Antonio had a 5-yard touchdown and were successful on the two-point conversion. The Raiders would grab their first lead of the night when Jaden Rivera scored on a 28-yard run. 21-14 Navarre after three.
Penton’s third field goal of the night (42 yards) gave Navarre their biggest lead of the game, 24-14. Tomaini would cut the lead back to three, as he scored on a 15-yard run at 5:27. On the Raiders next possession, Rivera started to his right, but cut back to the left and outraced the Lions defense to end zone from 42 yards out at 2:47. Tomaini would lead Leon on another scoring drive, ending with a 11-yard pass to Semaj James (who had 11 receptions on the night for 131 yards) with 50.7 seconds left on the clock. Raiders held on…31-28.
Navarre had trouble getting their passing attack going, so they relied on their running game. Both Rivera (19 carries, 212 yards) and Antonio (20 carries, 153 yards) had career best performances. Xayvion Thomas was the leading receiver with three grabs for 66 yards.
Bailey Huston led the defense with 9 tackles (6 solo/3 assists) and Kobe Johnson, Jeffery Mattox and Devin Wright added 7 tackles each. Connor Eastwood and Grady Kelly each had two sacks as the Raiders accumulated six sacks in the contest. Penton went 2-2 on extra points and 3-4 on field goals.
