132 games ago – Navarre 18, Gulf Breeze 9 (2008)

The Raiders (3-7) beat the Dolphins for the second straight year for the first time in the series. Navarre would go on to beat Gulf Breeze nine straight years before the streak would end in 2016.

Billy Mitchell would sign with the Marshall Thundering Herd; where he would be a 3-year starter at outside/inside linebacker. He attended Navarre as a freshman before his family moved to Oregon for two years (where he was All-State in Track and Field) after Hurricane Dennis hit the Florida Panhandle. But, he would return for his senior year.

Navarre was outscored in 2008 (271-141). The Class of 2009 was a part of Raider history (with two FHSAA playoff appearances).

The Raiders (2-7) lost their fifth straight game of the season and finished District play at 0-3; where they were outscored 102-7.

Navarre’s Grady Kelly receives another offer

Another day, another offer for Class of 2021 Navarre DL Grady Kelly, as he received an offer from Colorado State University.

This was the second offer that Kelly has received in the last week.  The previous one was from Morehead State.

He set the single season record for sacks in 2019 with 18 and has 19 in his career (which stands second all-time behind Josh Carter’s 20.5 sacks).

134 games ago – Florida High 42, Navarre 32 (2008)

The Raiders (2-6) returned home to Bennett C. Russell Stadium and took a 19-14 lead after one. The Seminoles rallied in the second to take a 28-19 halftime lead. Florida High outscored Navarre 14-13 in the second half for the victory.

The Raiders (2-5) were shut out for the second straight game (the only time this has happened in Navarre history). Junior DE Eugene Robinson was an integral part of the Raider defense in 2008.

136 games ago – Fort Walton Beach 33, Navarre 0 (2008)

The Raiders (2-4) were shut out for the first time in 39 games. RB Kwamane Howard led the team in scoring in 2008 with 66 points (11 rushing TDs). He was also selected to the end of season All-Star game, along with Billy Mitchell and Adam Hamilton.

Raiders lead overall series, 8-6 and have outscored the Vikings 349-254.

137 games ago – Mosley 42, Navarre 7 (2008)

Raiders (2-3) made a rare Thursday night visit to Panama City to take on the Dolphins. The Mosley ground attack was just too much for the Navarre defense on this night, as they racked up 370 yards rushing.

Overall series is tied at 2-2. Both of the Raiders losses were Thursday night games on the road.

Coach Chad Lashley shared a video with me for the 2008 season. The Raiders (1-2) went to the half up 16-10 on the road. Crusaders came back and tied the game at 23 and went on to outscore Navarre in the second half, 27-7 for the win.

QB Andrew Velasquez went 12-23, 134 yards, TD; but threw three picks. RB Kwamane Howard added two TDs and 59 yards rushing. Billy Mitchell led the defense with 10 tackles, while Adam Hamilton, Walter Hill and Armani Williams added 9 nine tackles each.

Navarre leads overall series, 13-8.

140 games ago – Navarre 20, West Florida Tech 3 (2008)

After falling behind 3-0 after the first quarter, the Raiders (1-1) scored 20 unanswered points in the second quarter to give Coach Lashley his first victory.

QB Andrew Velasquez led the way on offense, going 14-20 for 236 yards and 2 TDs. On defense, Ronnie Wesson registered 11 tackles; while DBs Adam Hamilton and Tre’Von Allen contributed 10 tackles each. Hamilton also tacked on two FGs (with a long of 37).

Navarre leads overall series, 5-0.
